Esteemed director Danny Boyle has commented on John Lydon’s scathing criticism of his upcoming Sex Pistols TV series, Pistol.

After losing a High Court battle in London to stop the Sex Pistols’ music from being used in Pistol last August, John Lydon issued a statement last month berating the newly premiered Pistol trailer.

“We were originally led to believe ‘Pistol’ was a Steve Jones story, not a Sex Pistols story,” a statement on Lydon’s website read. “Going by the trailer it doesn’t seem to be the case.

“John’s ‘likeness’ is clearly being used to sell this series, a series he was not involved in, and was put together behind his back. Putting words in John’s mouth and rewriting history. A middle-class fantasy.

“Disney have stolen the past and created a fairytale, which bears little resemblance to the truth. It would be funny if it wasn’t tragic.”

On 25th April, I issued a second statement reading: “A legal letter has been sent by John’s lawyers to the producers of FX’s Pistol today.

“The fact that the series is being described as “a dramatization” rather than “a factual documentary” does not excuse it from the prospect of being subject to scrutiny for defamation.

“John will not hesitate to pursue legal action to protect his reputation.”

Speaking to The Guardian about Pistol, Trainspotting and Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle lavished praise on the man who dubs him “Boyle on the bum.”

In fact, he said he’d be disappointed if Lydon didn’t criticize the TV series.

“Oh, he’s the genius,” Boyle enthused about Lydon. “I mean, obviously, you can’t make a series about him because he’s unmanageable. Everyone knows that. So, to get this book from Steve is like a side door in. It allows you to look at the whole group. But you have to acknowledge there’s a genius in there and it’s Rotten.

“He’s the person that changed everything, a key cultural figure in our landscape. I love Lydon for what he does and I don’t want him to like it (Pistol) – I want him to attack it. I think that’s his absolute right about him. Why would you change the habit of a lifetime?”

Based on Steve Jones’ acclaimed 2018 memoir ‘Lonely Boy: Tales from a Sex Pistol’ and directed by Danny Boyle, Pistol will premiere in the UK on Disney+ on Tuesday 31st May 2022.
